MFWA: Reducing teen pregnancy, STI transmission, and abortion through peer education in Mongolia
Mongolia Family Welfare Association`s (MFWA) Umnugobi branch successfully secured support from Gobi Oyu Development Support Fund, managed by the Oyu Tolgoi Mining Company, Ltd.
The project, entitled "Shining age in the future" comes with the project slogan "Our choice--healthy future." The project duration is from 1st May till 1st Nov 2017. Umnugobi branch received 63.271.000 tugrug (approx. 26.000 US dollars) for the project implementation.
The project's main goal is to contribute to the reduction of teenage pregnancy, abortion and sexually transmitted infections. The main activities of the project includes peer educators' training, sustaining health clubs, and enabling youth participation.
The project activities include development and printing of guidelines for the peer educators, information materials, printing of sexual and reproductive health (SRH) thematic station boards, uniforms for the peer educators, billboards installation in streets, meeting with local stakeholders, grand opening ceremony and project launch, dissemination through local mass media channels (including TV, newspapers, and social network), organizing press conference, and organizing various competitions and summer camps.
A total of 300 young people were trained as peer educators to disseminate accurate SRH information and knowledge to their peers. The partners are:
- Umnugobi Province Governor`s Office
- Department of Education, Culture and Sports, Umnugobi Province
- Health Department, Umnugovi province
- Vocational college
"We hope to replicate this success in our other province," shared Ms. Mutsi Batmunkh, MFWA Executive Director. "We gained a lot from the resource mobilization training by IPPF ESEAOR. We are thankful for it. We undertook a lot of resource mobilization activities after the training, we are currently waiting for them to bear fruit similar to this one."
