
The Regional Advocacy Training was held in Jogjakarta from 1 - 5 February 2010. The purpose of this five day training was to have a pool of young people in ESEAOR who are effective advocates for their Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR). A total of 30 participants inclusive of young people and youth officers participated in this training. Ms Jaya, Regional Programme Officer for Adolescents; Mr. Romeo Arca, Regional Programme Manager for Advocacy and Resource Mobilisation and Mr. Timoci, Regional Programme Officer for Adolescents at the Sub-Regional Office for the Pacific (SROP) facilitated the training sessions.
This five day training gave participants an in-depth understanding on advocacy, practical skills and tools on advocacy for SRHR, information on SRHR and development of advocacy action plan to be implemented by participants in their respective countries.
On the last day, the participants visited two local NGOs (Youth Forum and SUKMA) located at Jogjakarta chapter. These NGOs are involved in advocacy work among local government, schools and public to improve the sexual and reproductive rights of young people in Jogjakarta. The participants had an interactive session with the NGO staff and volunteers and many questions were asked on the advocacy work of the NGOs and the strategies they use to advocate for their rights.
At the end of the training, the participants had committed to work on their SRHR advocacy action plan with their MAs before submitting it to Regional office. Each successful action plan will be granted seed money of about USD1,000 through the MA to implement the action plan. Selected young people will be invited to share their initiatives and their experiences in implementing the SRHR advocacy action plan at the Regional Youth Forum in August 2010.
