Kiribati Makes Inroads into Area of “Hit Violence Against Women”

Kiribati Family Health Association (KFHA) implemented a workshop from 7—8 January 2008 as part of the International Programme on South Tarawa on World Ribbon Day. A grant of AS$1,994.00 was made available for this workshop by the Socio-Cultural Research Fund. Keeping the culture of the Kiribati community in mind, the workshop was targeted at the men and included also women who have been known to be victims of violence.

Talks were provided by the Police Force, Church representatives, Social Welfare representatives, Counselling centre representatives and KFHA representatives, touching on topics dealing with the Kiribati law and regulations on the Protection of Women and Children, moral and sexual relationships, effect on children, availability of Anger and Stress Management Services and Family Health.

The participants benefited from this workshop which assisted them understand better the effects of Violence Against Women and expressed the need for more such workshops.
